For the Coquitlam Express, it was anything but a happy Halloween.

The BC Hockey League team was shutout, 5-0, by the Langley Rivermen Sunday afternoon at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex. It was Coquitlam’s fifth loss in a row.

The Rivermen scored two goals in the first period — one of them by former Express Tyler Schleppe — one in the second and two more in the final frame.

All five goals were scored on Connor Mackenzie, who was chased from Coquitlam’s net after Langley’s Ryan Upson made it 5-0 8:58 into the third period. Adam Manji subsequently stopped all four shots he faced.

The loss leaves the Express just one point out of last place in the BCHL’s Coastal division after the Cowichan Valley Capitals defeated Vernon, 4-2, on Sunday.

Coquitlam will have plenty of opportunity to avenge Sunday’s setback, as the two teams meet three more times in the next 10 days, beginning Tuesday at the George Preston Arena in Langley.
