Coquitlam golfer Shin goes wire to wire to win in Manitoba

Coquitlam's Ally Shin went wire-to-wire and finished in style Thursday at the CN Future Links Prairie Championship at Minnewasta Golf and Country Club in Morden, Man.

Coquitlam's Ally Shin went wire-to-wire and finished in style Thursday at the CN Future Links Prairie Championship at Minnewasta Golf and Country Club in Morden, Man.

The 16-year-old Shin held off a field of 13 others in the junior girls division by firing three birdies in the final round to end with 82 and a 233 three-round total, three strokes better than runner-up Winnie Hyun (236) of Langley.

Victoria's Naomi Ko was third with 237.

Shin shot a division best 76 in the first round, followed by a 75 to holding a comfortable lead heading into day three. It marked Shin's first victory of the 2012 season, with her previous best finish being second place at the CJGA-Nike Junior Series/Sephen Ames Cup qualifier in March.

The win also earned Shin an exemption into the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian junior girls championship at Calgary's River Spirit Golf Club.

In the Prairie's junior boys division, two Coquitlam natives -- Jun Kang (77-83-84-244) and Young Oh (81-83-84-248) -- finished tied for 28th and 32nd respectively in a 40-shooter field.

Gajan Sivabalasingham of Ballantrae, Ont., finished first with an even-par 216 total.
