Coquitlam scored the first two runs of the game, but after that it was all Quebec, as the All-Stars lost their first game at the Canadian Little League championships, 12-2 in five innings Wednesday in Ancaster, Ont.
Quebec has yet to lose in the tournament, but both teams have already qualified for Friday’s semifinals.
After Brady Dorwart led off by singling the first pitch of the game to left field, Matthew Shanley smacked his first homerun of the tournament over the left field fence to give the All-Stars a quick advantage.
The team from Mirabel responded right away, scoring four runs in their half of the first inning.
Coquitlam retired in order in the top of the second, then another run by Quebec chased All-Stars’ starting pitcher Jordan Lisowski from the mound.
But there was little his replacement, Timothy Piasentin, could do to hush the Quebec bats, as they scored twice more to make the score 7-2.
Quebec put four more runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning, and, with a runner on third with two out, they just missed invoking a Little League rule that dictates a game ends if a team has a 10-run advantage.
But the rule did kick in when Quebec managed to score another run in the bottom of the fifth.
Coquitlam will play the representative team from the Prairies, Moose Jaw, on Thursday. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but had to be postponed because of a rainstorm.
