Coquitlam players make impact with SFU despite loss

SFU's Clan football team may have lost its home opener on Saturday but several Tri-City athletes stood out in the contest.

Coquitlam's Lemar Durant pulled in 10 catches for 114 yards and a touchdown as the squad kicked off its Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule with a 56-28 loss to Central Washington at Terry Fox Field.

Durant was responsible for the majority of Clan quarterback Trey Wheeler's completions, who finished the day with 28 of 36 pass attempts for 285 yards.

"They were the better team today," said Wheeler after the loss. "We need to be better in practice this week. We need to have a higher level of intensity."

Durant, who also scored two touchdowns in the Clan's week one win over Pacific University in Oregon, was not the only Tri-City player to have a standout game.

Former Centennial Centaur Bobby Pospischil pulled in back-to-back receptions when SFU took possession at their own 27-yard line as they tried to close the 35-14 scoring gap with 3:24 left in the third.

The first catch was good for 13 yards, while the second, a 19-yard reception, helped the Clan get into Central Washington's red zone.

SFU was able to turn the game around, with Wheeler finding Jamal Kett with a nine-yard pass for the touchdown, bringing the team within 14 points of the lead.

But Central Washington was able to pull away in the fourth quarter, and another late touchdown from SFU was not enough to close the gap.

The team will be on the road for the next two weeks with the next game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, in Arcata, Calif., against Humboldt State.
