Coquitlam's Besushko named player of the week

Simon Fraser University's men's soccer fullback Matt Besushko has been named the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Simon Fraser University's men's soccer fullback Matt Besushko has been named the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The Port Moody player led the Clan defense to two victories over the weekend, holding the opposition to only 16 shots and one goal in over 180 minutes of play.

He even chipped in with a bit of offense, scoring a goal in the 13th minute against Saint Martin's on Sunday, heading a corner kick into the back of the net.

"It was a strong collective effort from all of our players, with everyone willing to work for each other," said Besuschko. "I've been waiting for the opportunity to connect with one of our crosses and I finally found myself on the end of it and scoring in front of the home crowd was a great feeling."

What makes Besuschko's accomplishment even more impressive is the fact that he was ill for most of the weekend. Head coach Alan Koch said the SFU senior was able to play through his sickness, posting his most impressive results of the season.

"He fought through illness to help us contain an excellent SPU attack and he was the leader of a back four against SMU that limited them to very few opportunities," Koch said.

SFU will travel to Bellingham next weekend to battle cross-border rivals the Western Washington Vikings.
