Early surge boosts PoMo Gunners

Four first-half goals were plenty to propel the Port Moody Gunners to a 4-1 romp over the previously unbeaten Chilliwack Rapids in a Fraser Valley Soccer League men's Premier division match Friday at Chilliwack's Exhibition Park.

Four first-half goals were plenty to propel the Port Moody Gunners to a 4-1 romp over the previously unbeaten Chilliwack Rapids in a Fraser Valley Soccer League men's Premier division match Friday at Chilliwack's Exhibition Park.

The win moved the Gunners into a second-place tie via a pair of wins and one loss.

Nirma Ranji opened the game's scoring 13 minutes in when he converted a fine through ball by Corey Sayers with a corner blast from 16 yards out.

John Clune then headed home a free kick from Aaron Nerdahl to make it 2-0 PoMo at the 18-minute mark.

The Gunners continued to own the ball and were again rewarded when Kevin Comeau thundered home a crafty layoff pass in the 40th minute, while Rowe's delicate chip into the top corner in the 43rd minute gave PoMo a convincing 4-0 advantage at halftime.

Gunners goalie Brent Godin stopped a Rapids' penalty boot in the 75th minute, only to watch his shutout get spoiled when Chilliwack scored off a corner kick with two minutes remaining in the game.

Synergy SUPER

After scoring three goals the previous, a sizzling Michelle Francis kept her hot streak going Sunday when she tallied twice more in a 2-1 triumph for the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Synergy over the Surdel Hotshots in a women's U-21 contest at Percy Perry Stadium.

Bahar Khodabakhsh and Lorena Godinez were midfield standouts for Synergy. CMF defenders Jordan Kennedy and Hilary Ferguson were also steller.

Nitro ties

Tia Edgar notched the tying goal as the Port Moody Nitro battled Burnaby's Central City Extreme to a 1-1 deadlock in a girls U-17 Gold game Sunday.

Chiara Ignace was strong in net for the Nitro, while Alecia Tingling was a force on defence for PoMo.
