Ewart falls to second

Coquitlam's A.J. Ewart fell short in his quest to repeat as the B.C. Bantam Boys golfing champion.

Coquitlam's A.J. Ewart fell short in his quest to repeat as the B.C. Bantam Boys golfing champion.

Ewart, a 14-year-old member of the Pitt Meadows Golf Club and the 2011 Bantam Boys' champion, took a one-shot lead into Tuesday's final round at Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club but was unable to hold off a late charge from Roy Kang of North Vancouver.

Kang, 14, fired a two-under-par 68 on the final day that featured wind gusts and overcast skies. Kang's two-day total of three under par (69-68-137) gave him a two-shot victory over Ewart (68-71-139) for the Harry White Trophy.

"It was a tough one out there," said Kang, a member of the Swan-e-Set Bay Resort in Pitt Meadows.

"I had some birdies and bogeys and I tried to grind it out. I didn't know if I was going to win so I just kept trying to make par. It was a great win."

Josh Killins of Coquitlam finished in 18th, carding an 80-74-154 to finish at 14 over.

Alisha Lau of Richmond won the Bantam Girls' crown. The 13-year-old finished at one under, shooting a 70-69-139. Hannah Lee of Surrey finished second at even par (70-70-140).

Euna Han of Coquitlam finished at 13 over (78-75-153), good enough for eighth spot, while Coquitlam's Grace Killins' two-round total of 94-107-201 put her in 23rd place.
