The BCHL's most explosive attack was doused in an afternoon drizzle Sunday in Nanaimo.
The Nanaimo Clippers hammered the Express 8-1 Sunday afternoon to end Coquitlam's hopes of a six-point weekend.
Zach Hodder had the lone goal for the Express, who trailed 2-0 after one and 4-1 heading into the final period.
"We just ran out of steam," head coach Barry Wolfe said of the loss that ended a stretch of four games in five nights.
"It was a big emotional win Saturday night and I just think we came out a little flat and just couldn't recover."
Captain Ryan Rosenthal capped off Saturday's effort, netting his second of the game in overtime to lift the Express over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 5-4.
"He made a great play, drove wide and got the puck to the net and put it in," said Wolff.
John Sanders, Jackson Cressey and Joey Santucci also scored Saturday, with Pierce Dushenko turning aside 37 shots. Alberni Valley outshot the Express 41-31 but all five shots in overtime belonged to Coquitlam.
Santucci provided the offensive spark Friday night, netting a hat trick in the first five minutes of a 9-6 win over the visiting Surrey Eagles.
"We got out to a great start. It was important because Wednesday [7-5 loss to the Eagles] we didn't have a great start," said Wolff. "We scored a lot early and then kind of let them back in a bit."
Canon Pieper scored twice for the Express, with Marc Biega chipping in a goal and three assists and Rosenthal adding a goal and a pair of helpers. Jackson Cressey and Adam Rockwood rounded out the scoring for Coquitlam. Gordie Defiel turned aside 27 shots.
The Express are back on the ice Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) when they take on the visiting Prince George Spruce Kings. Prince George sits eight points ahead of the Express in the BCHL Mainland Division.
"We play them twice [Friday at 7 p.m.] so those are huge four-point games. It's important for us to win those at home," said Wolff.
