An under-14 Coquitlam female field hockey team basked in their bronze win - and the California sun - at the Cal Cup international field hockey tournament last month.
Field Hockey Factory, a Coquitlam-based development program, made their way to Moorpark, Calif., during the last week of May to meet some stiff competition at one of the largest field hockey tournaments in North America.
There are 150 teams from the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Taiwan that take part in the tournament, and Field Hockey Factory faced a tough pool of California-grown competition. After going undefeated during round-robin play, FHF found the strength to eliminate a Vancouver-based team in the quarter finals. Then, in a game that would decide who would move on to the gold medal match, Coquitlam FHF and a Maryland team wound up in a shoot-out, at the end of which FHF was handed its first and only loss of the tournament.
Afterwards FHF focused its attention on winning the bronze medal. The battle for bronze was a closely contested game that saw FHF hold on to an early lead to win 1-0 against another California team.
