Tri-Cities youngsters have a chance to brush up on their basketball skills with the help of some top-flight instructors.
A free basketball clinic will be held Saturday at Terry Fox secondary, with children in Grades 5 to 8 taking the court from 9-10:30 a.m. followed by those in Grades 9 to 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"It's really to focus just on the basic skills: dribbling, ball handling, shooting. The big thing is just to get them back out there and brush up on their skills a little bit before the season starts," said Pete Vieweg, director of operations with 3D Basketball.
Saturday's clinic will be led by B.C. Basketball Hall of Fame 2013 inductee Richie Chambers, the junior women's national team coach who will also coach the Terry Fox senior girls this season. Steve Hanson, coach of the provincial champion Terry Fox senior boys, and Curtis Nelson, last year's coach of the year with the Douglas College Royals women's team, will also be on hand for the sessions.
"Our basic program, at the end of it all, is to get kids ready for post-secondary scholarships," said Vieweg. "We've had over 90 kids go on to post-secondary varsity sports."
He said 3D Basketball has arranged for future clinics at Terry Fox on Saturdays and is working on lining up clinics at another location during the week.
"We hope the kids will come and check it out (Saturday) and maybe down the road they can come see about our programs on a regular basis," said Vieweg. "We're looking forward to introducing our product. The overall goal is to improve the basketball skills and really give kids something to strive for."
