Two Tri-City mountain bikers named Gioia placed first and second in their respective divisions at the 2014 Canadian Mountain Bike Downhill Championships on Sunday at the Sun Peaks Resort.
Bryan Gioia of Port Moody took first place in the Master 40 to 49 years category while Karaleen Gioia of PoMo placed second to Keara Clark of Squamish in the Master women category.
Bryan Gioia finished the 2.6 km course in 3 minutes, 56.16 seconds, eight and 12 seconds respectively ahead of North Van residents Colin Yarrow and Martin Newman. Karaleen Gioia finished just 2.02 seconds behind Clark's 4:31:37.
The Canadian Championships is the most important one-day race of the season for the top Canadian downhillers, with the highly-coveted Maple Leaf Jersey and sleeve on the line.
The Downhill race took place on a course featuring sub-alpine forest, rollers and single-track.
