The Port Moody Lordco Gunners men's teams sit atop three of four Fraser Valley Soccer League divisions.
The Premier team took over top spot with a 3-0 shutout over North Delta in a first-place showdown last Friday night.
Marcos da Silva opened the scoring and six minutes later Andrew Celenza slotted home the insurance marker off a great counter-attack. Vaughn Andrews finished the scoring with his seventh goal in the past six games. David Robson anchored a stingy back-line in the convincing win.
In Division 1 action, the Gunners scored twice in the final 10 minutes to upend the North Coquitlam Revolution 2-1. After going down to 10 men, Nima Ranji fed Jake Hoedel for a breakaway goal. Ranji then capped an awesome run by Jack Livesey to notch the winner in the 89th minute.Corey Sayers turned in a strong performance in goal.
Four U21 call-ups helped the Division 3 Gunners get past the Langley United Benders 4-2 Saturday. The win puts the Gunners in first place with an 8-1-1 record.
Langley opened the scoring but Ian Favelle quickly brought Port Moody even. In his first game, U21 call-up Edi Bogere scored on a beautiful effort to knot the game 2-2 and then converted a penalty kick 15 minutes later for his second of the game. Shaun Leong put the game away with a well-hit free kick. Call-ups Nick Leonard, Jordan Bordignon and Sepehr Ghanipour helped anchor a back line that saw Nathan McKinnon return to action after being out since early September.
Julian Katz notched his league-leading eighth goal to help the U21 Gunners remain unbeaten with a 2-1 win over Aldergrove.
David Suh opened the scoring with a tap-in after Santiago Vasquez undressed the Aldergrove defence.
The Port Moody RedCaps gave the goalposts a workout in a 3-3 draw against the Coquitlam Metro Ford Fury in U16 Division 1 soccer on the weekend.
Former Fury player Yutaka Yen staked the RedCaps to a 1-0 lead. However, the Fury took advantage of some poor marking and a lack of defensive effort to pull ahead 2-1 at the half.
After hitting a goal post and crossbar, the RedCaps were able to pull even when Brad Gregory scored following a huge effort by Kyle Winslow and Connor Wong. Anton Pisaryk restored the lead for the RedCaps who saw shots again bounce off the post and crossbar. Poor positioning allowed the Fury to notch the equalizer with only minutes to play.
Injuries took their toll and the Port Moody Quicksilver who fell 2-1 to the Vancouver United FC Westside Warriors in U17 girls Division 2 action.
With four players sidelined and another three playing injured, regular goalkeeper Ellie Langr was forced into action at midfield. Brazilian import Gabi Marques scored her first goal to give the Quicksilver a 1-0 lead at half.
The Warriors turned up the pressure in the second half, breaking down the Quicksilver's tough defence anchored by Jenna Jessa, Lori Jiang and Kailin Babey. Sydney LeGoff earned player-of-the-match honours for making numerous saves after being forced into goal from her normal role of attacker.
A late rally by CMF TnT fell just short in U15 girls action Sunday. Midfielder Keisha Markiewicz raced down the left side to score with two minutes left as TnT were edged 2-1 by AGFC United.
TnT failed to capitalize on a number of scoring chances. Tessa Weimer was thwarted on a penalty kick and Nicole Chursinoff missed the mark by inches on the rebound off of a corner kick by Weimer. The United keeper just managed to get a fingertip on a shot by Risako Kazemi, sending it just wide of the goal.
