Hometown crowd doesn't help Tri-City Bandits

Having the support of the hometown crowd has not helped the Tri-City Bandits, who are hosting the Presidents' Cup this week at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex in Coquitlam.

Having the support of the hometown crowd has not helped the Tri-City Bandits, who are hosting the Presidents' Cup this week at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex in Coquitlam.

The senior 'B' lacrosse team has fallen to last place in the tournament standings with a 4-0 record, dropping games to Kahanawak, Nanaimo, St. Albert and Onondaga.

The Bandits started the tournament with a tough loss to the Khanawake Mohawks of the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League, losing 8-7 Monday morning.

Tri-City forward Darcy Cummings opened the scoring on the power play before Jesse Guerin made it 2-1 for the Bandits with a shorthanded marker.

But the Mohawks began to pull away in the second period when Caleb Wiles, Mark Vandenburg and Alex Kedoh Hill each scored to make it 4-2 for the Quebec club.

The Bandits managed to even the score in the third but a shorthanded Mohawks goal with 47 seconds left in the final frame sealed the loss for the Tri-City club.

Tri-City's troubles continued in the second game of the tournament on Tuesday against West Coast Senior Lacrosse League rivals the Nanaimo Timbermen.

The two clubs had not faced each other since the Bandits defeated the Vancouver Island team in the WCSL finals last month. But this time it would be the Nanaimo Timbermen who emerged victorious in the Presidents' Cup round-robin match.

Despite taking a 4-2 lead in the first period, the Bandits allowed the Timbermen to tie the game in the second period before Mike Berekoff scored two unanswered goals in the third to win it for Nanaimo.

BANDITS LOOK FOR FIRST WIN

The St. Albert Miners of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League, a club that currently sits at the top of the tournament standings with a perfect 4-0 record, notched its win against the Bandits Tuesday night.

The visiting club got got even-strength goals in the first from Nate Schmidt and Jordan Comfield before Chris Schmidt scored two in the second period.

Bandits' forward Jordan Flaman, Bryan Poole and Daniel Perrault each notched markers to keep the score close, but four goals in the third period helped the Miners dig a hole for Tri-City and they couldn't climb out. The Bandits lost 8-6.

The Onondaga Redhawks of the Can-Am Lacrosse League also dealt Tri-City a notch in the loss column when the two teams faced off Wednesday night.

Despite the fact the Bandits jumped out to a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, the Redhawks took the lead in the second with a hat trick from Miles Thompson, who finished the game with four goals.

Jesse Guerin, Steve Hinek, Kerry Susheski and Jarret Neigum all scored singles for the Bandits in the 11-6 loss, while Nik Bilic scored two in the game.

The Tri-City Bandits were scheduled to take on the Akwesasne Outlaws of the Three Nations Senior Lacrosse League Thursday night after The Tri-City News' deadline. The last game of round-robin play is against Six Nations of the Ontario Lacrosse Association and is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29 at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex.

Semifinal games are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, while the bronze medal game will take place at noon and the gold medal game will take place at 4:30 on Sunday, Aug. 31 at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex.
