Jr. Ravens secure rugby title with win over South Surrey

The Fraser Valley Rugby Championship was a battle between two undefeated teams, but in the end it was the Terry Fox Jr. Ravens who emerged with their record intact.

The Fraser Valley Rugby Championship was a battle between two undefeated teams, but in the end it was the Terry Fox Jr. Ravens who emerged with their record intact.

The PoCo club manhandled Surrey's Earl Marriott secondary in much the same way they defeated every team they faced this season: strength and determination.

"Had you suggested to me back in February that they would reach such heights I would have scoffed," said co-coach Jorge Knizek. "But they certainly proved me wrong."

This week's final started well for Fox, who jumped out to an early 12-0 lead on the strength of two Mike West tries, the second of which came after dodging a number of tacklers and sprinting 55 metres for the tally. But the South Surrey squad was able to respond and tied the game up 12-12 before the first half was over.

The Ravens were undeterred and continued to put the pressure on the opposition.

Isaiah Stevens put Fox back in the lead with two early scores to make the game 26-12.

Earl Marriott, however, would not go away, with the team closing the gap with a few tallies of their own to make it 26-22.

But that was the last bit of offense the Surrey squad was able to muster in the championship bout, and the Ravens still had more.

Scott Barker clinched the victory for Terry Fox to make it 31-22, putting away the opposition in the final minutes of the second half.
