The Coquitlam Skating Club has a new member for the upcoming season who is already making his presence known on the international stage.
Alexander Kan, who is originally from Richmond Hill, Ont., but recently moved to the Tri-Cities, was the 2013 Junior Canadian Champion. He struggled at the 2014 Senior Canadian championship, but finished in sixth place last month when he competed in the 2014 Junior Grand Prix in Ljublijana, Slovenia.
He had been in third place after Thursday's short program but dropped to sixth with the 10th best free skate at 162.52.
Kan, who is coached by Heather Austman, is expected to represent his club at the seventh Junior Grand Prix event in Zagreb, Croatia, next month.
Another Tri-City skater and Coquitlam Skating Club member had a strong showing at last month's ISU Junior Grand Prix.
Brianna Delmaestro of Port Moody took second place along with Timothy Lum of Burnaby in the short dance program with a 49.14, just missing first place, which was won by Daria Morozova and Mikhail Zhirnov of Russia, who had a 49.8.
