Playing in front of their hometown crowd propelled the Heritage Woods Kodiaks to the final game of the AAAA girls' volleyball championship on Saturday but was not enough to win them a gold medal.
Instead the Tri-City club, which participated in the tournament at Riverside secondary against teams from across B.C., will have to settle for silver after coming up short in a five-set final match against South Delta.
The Kodiaks did not have a strong start in the championship game, dropping the first two sets 25-22 and 25-22. But the team powered back in the next two sets, winning 26-24 and 25-16 before losing the fifth 15-12.
On their way to the final, Heritage Woods defeated Argyle secondary from North Vancouver in the opening championship draw, followed by a win over South Kamloops in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, the Kodiaks dropped Tri-City rivals the Charles Best Blue Devils in three straight sets.
After the loss, Best played in the consolation game for a bronze medal, but lost to Earl Marriott.
The Riverside Rapids and the Terry Fox Ravens, the two teams hosting the tournament, failed to win their first game. Riverside finished in eighth place, while the Ravens ended the tournament in fifteenth place.
