The lacrosse community is rallying for the family of one of its own.
Emily Goss, the 24-year-old daughter of New Westminster Jr. Salmonbellies’ general manager Warren Goss, and his wife, Shawna, suffered a head injury when she was hit by a car in south London about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 16. She is currently in a medically-induced coma, but physicians at St. George’s Hospital were beginning to lighten her sedation. She suffered to broken bones or organ damage in the accident.
Emily is also the granddaughter of lacrosse Hall of Famer Wayne Goss, and she’s an accomplished player herself; she was set to play in the provincial championships for her Salmonbellies’ women’s team upon her return from England.
A GoFundMe campaign has already raised more than $28,000 to help the family cover any costs, as they immediately flew to England to be at Emily’s bedside.
Another campaign has also been launched by Deb and Russ Heard, who’s the coach of the Junior A Burnaby Lakers, as well as Candide and Troy Dickson, who’s an alternate governor for the Salmonbellies. Donations to that fund can be e-transferred to debheard@shaw.ca.
A notice posted on the BC Junior A Lacrosse League’s website said, “Every penny will be sent directly to the Goss family to assist them as needed.”
Carol Goss, Emily’s grandmother, said the positive energy coming from the lacrosse community is helping the family cope.
“People are sending emails to her every day,” she said. “They are reading to her every day and they are printing them up. They are keeping a book so she knows how many people this has affected.”
