Coquitlam’s Caroline Dong won four gold medals in short track speed skating events at the BC Winter Games last weekend in Fort St. John.
Dong took the top step in the 400m and 1500m girls short track events, as well as the 2000m point race. She was also part of the team that won gold in the 3000m girls short track relay and she won a bronze in the mass start long track event.
Chassetty Berkowski was another triple gold medalist. The Special Olympian from Coquitlam won three short track speed skating events and finished second in two others. Her brother, Johnathan, captured gold in the 222m men’s Special Olympics short track race.
Other local athletes who returned from the three-day event with gold medals around their necks include: Anson Chiu, of Coquitlam, won two golds in karate; Tamas Juk, of Coquitlam, won gold in the gymnastics male L3 vault; Coquitlam’s Joy Liu won gold in single girls badminton; and Vanessa Wilson, of Port Coquitlam, finished in first in girls gymnastics JO8 floor.
Julia Pang and Isabel Zhao, both from Coquitlam, won gold in girls doubles badminton and several local athletes were part of the team that won the mixed team competition.
Evan Maxwell Fenton of Coquitlam, and Adam Michael Fenton, of Port Coquitlam, were part of the team that won gold in boys curling and Coquitlam’s Alex Duan was part of the gold medal winning team in the boys 3000m relay short track speed skating event.
