The Maple Ridge Burrards let the second game of the Mann Cup get away from them. Then they let their emotions get away too.
The Burrards scored the game’s first goal then never scored again as the Peterborough Lakers netted the next 10 to take a 10-1 victory and a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven national senior lacrosse championship series in Peterborough.
As the Lakers rained 61 shots at Coquitlam’s Frank Scigiliano in the Maple Ridge net and connected on four of them in the first period, four more in the second and two in the third, the Burrards started filling the penalty box, including several misconduct penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct and a game misconduct to an assistant coach. In total Maple Ridge was assessed 118 minutes in penalties while the Lakers amassed 53.
Burrards coach Rob Williams told the Peterborough Examiner his team was frustrated by what they felt were several missed calls by officials.
“I feel like they got away with some stuff on our D guys and we got away with very little on their O guys,” Williams said.
Coquitlam’s Ben McIntosh set up the Burrards only goal, 8:37 into the first period.
The teams have Sunday off before the series resumes on Monday.
