Mashinchi powers T-Bird attack

Port Moody's Navid Mashinchi earned Canada West player-of-the-week honours for helping the UBC Thunderbirds soccer team to a pair of wins over the weekend.

The UBC midfielder picked up a pair of assists in the T-Birds 4-0 win over the Alberta Golden Bears Saturday night.

Coquitlam's Paul Clerc also got on the scoreboard when he directed in a booming corner kick for his league-leading sixth goal of the season. Milab Mehrabi, also of Coquitlam, provided another UBC goal when he buried a cross from Mashinchi.

Mashinchi found the net twice against the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday at Thunderbird Stadium.

The fourth-year Commerce student opened the scoring in the 16th minute knocking in his own rebound from a saved penalty kick. Then with the score tied in the 88th minute, Mashinchi got the game winner as he buried a loose ball in the penalty area to give his team a 3-2 victory.

The No. 2-ranked T-Birds have now won six in a row to push their record to 7-1. UBC now travels to Prince George for a two-game series against the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves.

Tri-City athletes also played major roles for Simon Fraser University over the weekend.

Simon Fraser's men's soccer team hammered the University Of Mary Marauders 6-0 to reel off their eighth straight win to start the season. Coquitlam's Jovan Blagojevic scored twice for the Clan. The Clan next face the Seattle Pacific University Falcons.

SFU women battled through double overtime to earn a scoreless draw in their soccer match against the Western Oregon Wolves.

Yva Rodriguez of Port Coquitlam almost put the Clan on top with a shot that beat the goalkeeper but rang off the crossbar with 15 minutes remaining.

"Everyone was fighting so hard in this game and you could really see it," said defender Kelsey Atherley of Port Moody. "We got a great effort from everybody. We know we can play against these teams and the fight that everyone is showing is a sign of good things to come."

With the tie, the Clan's record moves to 0-2-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. The women's soccer team will be back in action Thursday at Terry Fox Field against the Central Washington University Wildcats.

The Western Oregon Wolves handed the Clan their first loss on the gridiron, falling 30-9 at Terry Fox Field.

Coquitlam's Bobby Pospischil led SFU receivers with six catches for 86 yards. Case Chin of Port Moody led the defence with 12 tackles.

The loss drops the Clan's record to 2-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

SFU now heads to St. George, Utah to take on the Dixie State College Red Storm.

The SFU women's volleyball team were knocked off by the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets 25-18, 25-15, 25-22. A Port Moody trio put in a strong effort for the clan, with Alanna Chan recording eight digs, followed by Alison McKay with seven and Helen Chan with six.

The loss drops the Clan's record 0-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play and 5-3 on the season. SFU will next host the Central Washington Wildcats Thursday.
