Murray gets Maitland trophy

Coquitlam Sr. Adanacs captain Bruce Murray was recognized for his sportsmanship and dedication to lacrosse when he was awarded the Maitland Trophy last week.

The Western Lacrosse Association said in a statement that the award is handed out annually to a player best displaying value to his team, volunteer assistance to minor lacrosse and good sportsmanship.

Murray has been with the club since 2010 and scored one goal and two assists in the 18 games he played.

Coquitlam missed the playoffs this year, finishing the regular season in fourth place with a 7-11 record.

EXPRESS EXHIBITION

The Coquitlam Express will begin its defence of the Fred Page Cup title when the club's exhibition season gets underway next week.

Coquitlam will take on the Langley Rivermen at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. before a second match against the Surrey Eagles at the Port Coquitlam Recreation Centre on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. The third local game on the exhibition schedule is against Powell River at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex on Friday, Sept. 12.

LEARN TO CURL

The Port Moody Curling Club is holding its registration period next week at its annual open house at the Ice House Lounge in the Port Moody Recreation Complex (300 Ioco Rd.). Kids, teens, adults and seniors are all encouraged to come give the sport a try and sign up between 7 and 9 p.m. on Sept. 5.

BRONZE FOR LEW

Jasmine Lew ended the track and field season on a strong note, finishing third in the 100 m dash at the Canadian Legions Youth championships in Langley last week.

Her South Fraser Track & Field Club fought hard against the provincial teams for a fourth place finish in the under-16 sprint dedley (4:22.76) and placed fourth in the 4x100 (50.57) an hour later.

She also matched her seasonal best long jump of 5.22m to place fourth.
