Two Coquitlam residents are being honoured at the Greater Vancouver Motorsports Pioneer Society's 14th annual induction ceremony in Surrey this weekend.

Dennis Groundwater will be recognized for his contributions as a classic car collector and restorer, while Keith Winterbottom is being inducted as a pioneer drag racer.

Winterbottom began his racing career in 1969 and has continued to race at drag strips through western Canada and the United States. He and his Hobo Racing Team have won numerous big races and multiple awards over his 45 years of competition and can still be found most weekends at the Mission Raceways.

Groundwater has been a hot rod hobbyist for over half a century, winning multiple awards for a pair of 1940 Fords he restored. A rare 1947 convertible took him eight years to reconstruct, while the 1948 Ford station wagon took him 16 years to bring back to life.

The two men will join 17 others at the induction ceremony this weekend and 215 pioneers who have already been honoured.

"The Motorsport Pioneers Society continues to recognize individuals who have made major contributions in past years as a way to celebrate this history, said GVMPS president Jim Greenwood

Motorsport enthusiasts are invited to the induction event, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20 between 1 and 5 p.m. at Shannon Hall at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. A $15 admission will be requested at the door and light snacks and beverages will be available.
