PHOTOS: Coquitlam Express see lots of red lights in special pink night at the rink

The Coquitlam Express scored the first two goals of their BC Hockey League game against the Powell River Kings on Wednesday, but then allowed nine of the next 10.

On a special pink night at the rink, the Coquitlam Express saw a lot of red behind their own net.

Wearing pink-trimmed jerseys to help raise awareness of breast cancer and raise money for a treatment centre at Port Moody’s Eagle Ridge Hospital, the Express fell 9-3 to the visiting Powell River Kings Wednesday at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex.

Coquitlam scored the first two goals — by Lucas Lundy and Shane LaVelle — and fired 24 shots at Kings goalie Zak Brice. But the teams were tied 2-2 at the intermission and Powell River kept rolling after the break, beating Express goalie Adam Manji four straight times.

Khalil Fontana got one of those back for Coquitlam with a power play goal 39 seconds into the third period. But again, Powell River replied with a run of three straight goals on Connor Mackenzie, who took over from Manji at the beginning of the frame.

The loss was Coquitlam’s third in a row and dropped the team to seventh place in the BC Hockey League’s Coastal conference, a point behind the Kings and Chilliwack Chiefs.

The Express will try to get back on a winning track Friday when the team travels to the South Surrey Arena for a game against the Surrey Eagles, against whom they’ve registered both their wins. Coquitlam’s next home game is Sunday at 3 p.m. against the Langley Rivermen.
