PoCo golfer qualifies for Canadian women's amateur championship

Port Coquitlam's Soo-Bin Kim finished second Friday but still won a spot on Team BC for the Royale Cup Canadian women's amateur golf championship July 24-27 in Lethbridge, Alta.

Port Coquitlam's Soo-Bin Kim finished second Friday but still won a spot on Team BC for the Royale Cup Canadian women's amateur golf championship July 24-27 in Lethbridge, Alta.

Kim fired birdies on holes four, six, seven and 10 but she couldn't catch a sizzling Christine Wong at the B.C. women's amateur championship at Christina Lake Golf Club. The Richmond native Wong followed up her third-round course record 65 with a two-under-par 70 to finish with a 274 total, four strokes better than the runner-up Kim.

"Soo-Bin is an excellent player, a clutch player and was able to a few birdies and narrow my lead, which made me more nervous," Wong said. "I had to tell myself that I still had the lead at that point."

After Kim pulled within three shots, Wong went on her birdie run, carding three in a row on holes 11, 12 and 13 to regain control.

"Right when [Kim] got [within] three, I was able to make three birdies in a row and get it back," Wong said. "I was more myself on the back nine."

Kim ended with an impressive four-round score of 70-70-71-67-278, three shots better than third-place finisher Megan Osland of Kelowna in the 41-finisher field. Wong, Kim and Osland all earned tickets to the Canadian amateur event later this month in Lethbridge.

PoCo's Anica Yoo was ninth with 72-73-72-72-289.
