PoMo sailors bring home precious medals

Some hard work on the high seas has paid off for several Port Moody sailors, who took home medals at the B.C. Summer Games last week.

Rocky Point Sailing Association member Harper Eksuri took silver in the girls' division, while fellow team member Gabrielle Savage won bronze in the event. On the boys' side, Evan Robson managed to find the podium when he placed third in his division.

Team coach Sebastian Fritz said he was happy his association members were rewarded for their hard work in preparation for the B.C. Summer Games.

"We have been training for the better part of a year," he said. "We were hoping to do well."

The provincial event is a stepping stone to higher levels of competition, he added. Many people who competed in Nanaimo last week will likely move on to nationals and even U.S. qualifiers, like one currently being held in San Francisco.

With Olympic-style podium events and a large opening and closing ceremonies, Fritz said the B.C. Summer Games have the feel of a large international event.

"Some can take it as a big shock," he said. "For the most part, people enjoy what it is like in the big leagues."

The Rocky Point Sailing Association currently has 2,000 members. For more information about the organization go to www.rpsa.ca.
