When Teagan Rasche first signed up with the Coquitlam Cheetahs track and field team, she tried to compete in every event she could.
However, it was the throwing sports where the Riverside secondary student excelled, and she slowly began to narrow her focus to javelin and the hammer throw.
Her hard work in the sport paid off this year, when the Grade 12 student signed a scholarship with the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech, where she will join the Hokies in the NCAA.
"The coach is highly respected across the country and he's known for coaching of the best throwers in the world," said the 17-year-old track athlete. "I went on an official visit during the end of October and I fell in love with everything. I instantly clicked with the athletes, the coach, and I felt very at home."
Rasche has competed at a high level before.
In 2013, she travelled to Donetsk, Ukraine, where she took part in the World Youth Championship. She said the experience helped her understand what it takes to compete against the top throwers in the sport.
Rasche, who will study broadcast journalism while at Virginia Tech, said she eventually hopes to represent Canada at the Olympics
