Jacob Dunbar and Garrett Winter lit up the BC Junior A Lacrosse League (BCJALL) for the Port Coquitlam Saints this past summer.

Now, the dynamic duo will get a chance to test their scoring prowess together on an even bigger stage.

Dunbar was a first-round pick — 13th overall — of the San Diego Seals from Saturday’s (Aug. 28) National Lacrosse League draft, and then was joined by his teammate when the Seals selected Winter in the fourth round, 52nd overall.

Dunbar and Winter combined for 64 points in just eight regular-season games, then added another 34 in five more post-season games in the BCJALL’s 2021 campaign that was shortened because of COVID-19 public health restrictions.

Dunbar, who’s from South Surrey, joined the Saints as the team’s top pick in the 2018 BCJALL draft. He made an immediate impression in his rookie season by leading the team in scoring with 59 points in 18 games.

He was also named to Canada’s team at the 2019 International Indoor Junior Lacrosse world championships in Mississauga, Ont.

Winter scored 30 points in 11 games in 2019, his last full season with the Saints. He had 26 points in eight games this past summer, then added another 14 in the post-season.

Other players familiar to local lacrosse fans that were selected Saturday include:

  • Colin Munro of the Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs selected 26th overall by the Buffalo Bandits
  • Thomas Semple of the Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs selected 30th overall by the Georgia Swarm
  • William Clayton of the Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs selected 66th overall by the Vancouver Warriors

The NLL plans to resume play Dec. 3 with a full 2021-22 season after the 2019-20 campaign was suspended by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020-21 season was cancelled altogether.
