The Grade 12 Archbishop Carney javelin athlete has signed a scholarship with University of Nebraska, where she will compete with the Cornhuskers track and field squad.

The NCAA division 1 school is consistently ranked in the top 25 and competes in the prestigious Big Ten Conference with track power houses such as the University of Illinois, the University of Michigan and Ohio State.

The 17-year-old Port Coquitlam athlete has been busy on the field the last few months.

Last spring, competing with a sprained ankle, she won her way on to Team Canada at the North American Youth Olympics Trials in Florida.

The paved the way for a spot at the Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China in August, her second trip to the event after heading to Ukraine in 2013.

When she spoke to The Tri-City News in August, Wolczyk said she was feeling good about her javelin career, saying she would one day like to compete in the Olympics.

Her throw in Florida - 48.02 m shot that secured one of four spots in the world youth competition - was her personal best.

She is now setting her sights on achieving even bigger numbers.

"I am hoping to move up from where I am right now," she said. "Now that I have had the whole summer to grow and develop, I think it will be a lot better."

Wolczyk has always loved track and field sports but over the years she has focused her efforts on javelin, an event she has always excelled at.

"I just sort of started dropping the jumps and the runs and stuck with the throws," she said. "I enjoy javelin the most."

Wolczyk's mother Nadia said the life of a javelin thrower can be lonely at times.

The off-seasons are long and there are only limited opportunities for her to compare herself to other athletes and gauge her progress.
