A pair of Port Moody players dug deep to help lift Simon Fraser University to its fifth straight win in women's volleyball action.
The Clan reeled off straight-set victories over the Capilano University Blues and Douglas College Royals Saturday at SFU.
Port Moody's Alanna Chan had 15 digs against Capilano while Helen Yan, also of Port Moody, also hit double digits with 10 digs.
The Clan trailed 5-1 early in the first set but scored eight of the next 12 points to tie the set at nine. The two sides traded points until the set was tied at 16 but from there the Clan took off, outscoring Capilano 9-1 the rest of the way to take the set, 25-17. SFU never trailed in the second set. Capilano kept things close in the third, with the match tied 11-11 at the midway point, before eventually falling 25-18.
"I thought we had a great team effort consistently throughout the weekend," said SFU head coach Gina Schmidt. "We used several different lineups but whoever was out there played their role and played it well."
The Clan trailed only once in the match against Douglas College, coming in the third set when the Royals scored the first point. Chan again led SFU in digs with 15, while Yan finished with seven.
SFU picked up the win by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-20 to push their record to 5-1. The five wins already exceeds SFU's total for all of 2012.
