Port Moody Panthers notch first regular season win

The Port Moody Panthers have finally put a notch in the win column, besting the Abbotsford Pilots 7-1 in front of the home crowd on Saturday night.

The Port Moody Panthers have finally put a notch in the win column, besting the Abbotsford Pilots 7-1 in front of the home crowd on Saturday night.

The Pacific Junior Hockey League squad has struggled so far this season and currently sits in last place in the Tom Shaw Conference.

But on Saturday, the Cats got their first taste of victory - and in dominating fashion.

After a scoreless first period, the Panthers got on the board with a marker from Derian White, who buried a pass from Adam Rota, eight minutes into the second.

White followed up with a power play marker two minutes later before Rota notched his first and second of the night to give his club a 4-0 lead.

But the Cats weren't finished scoring yet.

Rota, who was named first star of the game, finished off the hat trick in the third, while Ravinder Shokar and Cameron Obcena both notched singles in the win.

Spencer Kozlowski had his strongest game of the season in net, stopping 33 of the 34 shots he faced.

White was named second star of the match while Port Moody's Sammy Zeinab was named third star in the 7-1 win.

It was the same score but a different result 48 hours earlier when the Panthers lost 7-1 to the division-leading Richmond Sockeyes.

The Thursday night road game got off to a bad start for Port Moody, who was down 4-0 midway through the game.

A goal from Stefano Centanni late in the second period was the only offence the Cats could muster during the match.

Richmond added three unanswered markers in the final period.
