The Prince George Spruce Kings scored five goals before the visiting Coquitlam Express had an answer as the hosts at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena rolled to a 6-1 win in their BC Hockey League game Saturday.
Playing each other for the second time in two nights, the Spruce Kings scored once in the first period, twice in the second period and had two more in the third before Jared Power finally got Coquitlam on the scoreboard with less than five minutes left in the game.
Ben Poisson then rounded out the night’s scoring for Prince George with 54 seconds left on the clock.
It took both teams a period to shake off the fatigue from Friday’s 4-3 shootout win by the Spruce Kings as each side could muster only six shots on net. But the pace picked up in the middle frame when Prince George fired 15 shots at Express goalie Clay Stevenson while Coquitlam answered with 10 of their own.
The hosts dominated the third period, firing 17 shots at Stevenson. His mates could only muster eight at the Spruce Kings’ net.
The loss further imperils Coquitlam’s hold on third place in the Mainland division as the Langley Rivermen remain five points back but now have two games in hand. They’ll make up one of those games on Sunday, when they play the Centennials in Merritt.
In fact, the two teams are headed for a showdown next Saturday in Langley. But first, the Express will host the division-leading Chilliwack Chiefs on Friday, 7 p.m., at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex.
