Brian Purves of Port Coquitlam's Westwood Karate Academy was named 2011 Male Grand Champion at the Karate BC provincial championships last weekend in Burnaby.
The dojo sensei Purves collected the honour after having won twin gold -- in Open Weight men's black belt kumite (sparring) and men's Under-84 kg kumite.
Other Westwood martial artists to excel at the provincials were: Jacob Mand, gold in kata and kumite in Boys 10-11 Adavanced Black; Danica Kovinic, gold in Girls 10-11 Novice; Derek Stahr, bronze in kata and kumite in Boys 10-11 Intermediate; Julia Higgen, bronze in kata and kumite in Girls 10-11 Novice; Isaac Mand, bronze in kumite in Boys 14-15 Under-52 kg Elite Advanced Black; and Josh Biggin, bronze in kumite in Under-57 kg Elite Adavanced Black.
