Ravens get season off to strong start

The Terry Fox Ravens bounced back from last week's exhibition loss with a dominating effort against Rutland, dropping the visitors 52-0 in the most lopsided AAA high school football score of the weekend.

Team co-coach Jorge Knizek said his club had a strong first quarter but "exploded" in the second when running back Kyle Deugau rushed for three touchdowns. Defensive-end Brad Peters also chipped in some offence, recovering a bad long snap on special teams to help the Ravens to a 39-0 half-time lead.

Fox kept up the pressure in the final quarters, with quarterback Connor McKee adding to the lead when he connected with receiver Nick Agnoletto on a 40-yard passing play.

Adrial Sellers punched in the last touchdown of the game to seal the match in favour of the Ravens.

Terry Fox travels to Kelowna next weekend, where they will take on Mt. Boucherie.

Meanwhile, the Centennial Centaurs struggled in their season home opener, which they lost to St. Thomas More 40-24.

The team kept it close for the first half but coach Simon Quinto said some big plays in the closing quarters by St. Thomas made it difficult for his team to get back in the game.

However, he added that there were some bright spots in the loss that his team will build on when they meet Kelowna this Friday. Penalty troubles that plagued the team in exhibition were not a factor last weekend and several younger players have been able to fill the shoes of some injured veterans, he said.

"There were guys playing in different positions, but they stepped up for the challenge and performed admirably," he said. "We were able to see the potential from some of our new starters."
