The Terry Fox Ravens senior boys soccer team will play for third place in the Fraser Valley playdowns.

The Ravens lost their semifinal match against the Abbotsford Panthers, 1-0, at Gates Park in Port Coquitlam.

Terry Fox coach John Murphy said his team had the run of play for much of the match, but couldn’t convert its scoring chances.

“The boys played hard and deserved a better result for sure,” he said.

Abbotsford scored its goal in the second half on one of only three shots the Panthers managed in the match.

The Ravens will face Panorama Ridge, the runners up in last year’s provincials, on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the South Surrey Athletic Park.

The defending provincial champions, the Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils, will play the Heritage Woods Kodiaks for fifth place at noon, also at the South Surrey Athletic Park.

The Blue Devils won their first round match, 3-1, over Queen Elizabeth, but then succumbed to Abbotsford , 1-0 in penalty kicks, to be relegated to the consolation rounds where they beat Sardis and Tamanawis.

Heritage Woods followed up its 5-0 win over Sardis in the tournament’s first round with a 2-0 loss to LA Matheson. They also defeated Queen Elizabeth and Fleetwood Park.

The Pinetree Timberwolves rebounded from their opening round 1-0 loss to Panorama Ridge with a pair of wins over Princess Margaret and Enver Creek before bowing to LA Matheson, 4-2, on Tuesday to end their tournament and their aspirations of reaching the provincial finals.

The top seven teams from the Fraser Valleys advance to the provincial championships in Burnaby, Nov. 22 to 24.
