Reds enter playoff showdown versus Mariners in Victoria

The pitcher Becking tossed a one-hit victory as the Reds closed out regular-season play with a 3-1 triumph over the White Rocks Tritons at South Surrey Athletic Park.

The result left the Reds in sixth spot with a 26-22 record and set for a best-of-three first-round showdown on Vancouver Island versus the third place Victoria Mariners, who finished at 32-16. Games 1 and 2 are slated for Saturday, with a third game, if necessary, will go Sunday.

The top eight teams in the 13-squad loop qualified for the post-season, led by the first place Langley Blaze, who at 39-9 to win the league crown for fourth time in the last five years.

The four winners from first-round play will go to the 2012 BCPBL Final Four championship tournament Aug. 3-5 at Nanaimo's Serauxman Stadium.

On Monday, Tyler Yorko and Max Hollingworth had an RBI apiece in the Reds' modest four-hit attack, in which they mustered single runs in innings four through six before the Tritons responded with their lone run in the bottom of the sixth.

Meanwhile, the outfielder Hollingworth has been named Team BC's Under-17 provincial team that will compete in the Canada Cup from Aug. 8-13 in London, Ont.

Hollingworth is one of 20 players on the roster, with six alternates also in the mix.

COQUITLAM-MOODY HOSTS MOSQUITO PROVINCIALS

Coquitlam-Moody Minor Baseball is hosting the Mosquito 'A' provincial championships Aug. 2-6 at Town Centre Park.

Players aged 9 and 10 will toil in the first age level where Baseball BC offers a provincial championship program.
