Riverside gals ramble into BCs

Having already qualified for the B.C. AAA provincial finals via a pair of early wins, the Riverside Rapids capped their performance at the Fraser Valley senior girls high school basketball championships with a sound 61-34 triumph Saturday over the Maple Ridge Ramblers.

Megan Sherwood and Laiken Cerenzie netted 16 and 15 points respectively for the Rapids, who bounced back after being thumped 77-61 in the semifinals the previous day by Langley's Brookswood Bobcats.

The No. 4-ranked Rapids of Port Coquitlam entered their battle with Brookswood having already earned a provincial berth after victories over Mission's Heritage Park Highlanders (87-32) and Surrey's Fleetwood Park Dragons (93-44).

The provincials will be held March 9-12 at North Vancouver's Capilano College.

Meanwhile, the Terry Fox Ravens trounced Abbotsford's Yale Lions 64-39 Tuesday to advance to today's (Friday) Fraser Valley AAA senior boys hoop semifinals at Thomas Haney in Maple Ridge.

The Ravens will tangle at 6 p.m. with Port Moody's Heritage Woods Kodiaks, who advanced with a convincing 74-52 win over Surrey's Tamanawis Wildcats.

Abby's W.J. Mouat Hawks and Langley's Walnut Grove Gators clash in the other semi, 8 p.m. Gleneagle Talons remained alive with a 70-52 win over the MEI Eagles and were set to face Yale yesterday on the 16-team draw's consolation side.

Pinske stars

Coqutilam's Megan Pinske of Western Washington University was chosen to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's first all-star team in women's basketball, it was announced Wednesday.

A five-foot-nine senior guard, Pinske is a Port Moody secondary school grad who led the Blues to the B.C.'s.

Berg MVP

Wesley Berg snagged the MVP award as the Coquitlam Adanacs captured the gold medal in the men's Under-19 division at the B.C. Tier 2 field lacrosse championships last weekend in Burnaby.

Also, Steven Neufeld of the Adanacs earned a U-19 Fair Play Award, as did Port Coquitlam's Trevor Wiseman.

The Adanacs No. 3 squad grabbed silver in the U-16 category, while the U-12 Adanacs No. 4 unit earned bronze. Fair Play Awards also went to Adanacs No. 2's Cordel Maunder and Adanacs No. 3's Kyle Weir, both in the U-16 division; Adanacs No. 3's Grant Mason and PoCo's Nikita Bagg, both in the U-14 bracket; and Adanacs No. 4's Alex Dozzi and PoCo's Cortlinel Gibson, both in the U-12 category.

Dow delivers

Coquitlam's Colton Dow zipped in three goals but his Simon Fraser Clan were tripped 12-11 in overtime by the Utah Utes in a university men's field lacrosse contest last Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Calvin Craig, another Coquiltam product, added a goal and one assist for the Clan.

Morris east

Port Coquitlam's Jordan Morris of St. Thomas More Collegiate high school has committed to play university football next fall with the Acadia Axemen of Wolfville, N.S.

Morris is a six-foot-three, 270-pound offensive tackle and also plays goalie in lacrosse.

Soccer win

Edi Nyigwo knocked in a pair of goals to guide Coquitlam Metro-Ford Liverpool to a 3-1 victory over North Coquitlam United in a boys Under-16 Gold division soccer battle Saturday at Town Centre Park.

Dom Brazinha also tallied for Liverpool, who got two assists from Moreno Zanetti.
