Cinco de Mayo haunted the Port Coquitlam Saints lacrosse club this week as their side of the scoreboard stayed frozen at five goals.

On Saturday evening, the Saints drew first blood while visiting the Delta Islanders at Sungod Arena. Saints' runner Connor Goodwin opened the scoring, assisted by Lyndon Knuttila and Trevor Wiseman.

A check from behind in the closing minutes of the first period cost Saints' runner Bryce Labelle four minutes in the penalty box. The Islanders capitalized on the man advantage and got on the scoreboard with 50 seconds left in the period.

In the next frame, Goodwin netted his second goal of the evening, while Knuttila also scored for the Saints. Both teams were tied at four going into the last period.

The Islanders relentlessly dominated the Saints in their end during the final frame. Delta's Eli McLaughlin picked up three goals in 10 minutes, for a game total of four.

Saints' runner Leigh Kinakin started and ended the period in the penalty box for high sticking and roughing, respectively.

In the 9-5 loss, Saints' netminder Garrett Spann recorded 28 saves.

Then, on Tuesday, the team travelled to New Westminster to take on the Salmonbellies, who annihilated the Saints in the opening period in which seven different Salmonbellies' players scored.

There was some fleeting synergy in the second frame as Saints' runner Tyler Klarner teamed up with Nash Harrison and Goodwin for a pair of goals.

Down by 10 going into the final period, emotions were running high on the Saints' bench. Less than a minute in, Quinn Stuart received a 10-minute misconduct and an additional two minute penalty for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

There would be another eight minutes in Saints' penalties before the game, which ended 15-5 in favour of the Salmonbellies, was through.

The Saints are next in action tonight at the Port Coquitlam Recreation Centre at 8 p.m.

Meanwhile, the neighbouring Coquitlam junior Adanacs' players treated their moms to an 18-7 win against the Burnaby Lakers on Sunday, Mother's Day.

Andy Taylor picked up a pair of goals and assists for the A's in the first frame, giving the team a comfortable seven-goal lead.

The Adanacs also took advantage of a spate of Lakers' penalties, scoring two power play goals in the span of 30 seconds. Coquitlam netminder Giulio Del Bianco made 28 saves in the A's win.

In other Adanac news, Tyler Garrison has now returned to fulfill his captain duties with the team after his rookie season with the National Lacrosse League's Washington Stealth ended on Saturday.

He will join the Adanacs on Saturday when they travel to Victoria to take on the Shamrocks at Bear Mountain Arena.

Both the Saints and the Adanacs are currently tied for fourth place in BC Junior A Lacrosse League standings.
