Soccer Royals riding high at nationals

The Douglas Royals men’s soccer team will face the Keyano Huskies in one of two semi-finals today to decide who will play for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men’s soccer championship.

The Douglas Royals men’s soccer team will face the Keyano Huskies in one of two semi-finals today to decide who will play for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men’s soccer championship.

The Royals defeated the Algonquin Thunder 2-1 after penalty kicks in their opening round match on Wednesday at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo.

Royals’ keeper Ryo Mizuno made two diving saves while his teammates hit the back of the net four times during penalty kicks. after the teams had battled to a 1-1 draw after full time.

Douglas opened the scoring in the 65th minute on a free kick by Eric Ray, but Algonquin equalized just eight minutes later.

Coquitlam’s Quinn Dawson was named the Royals’ player of the game.

At the other end of the country, in Halifax, the Royals’ women’s team was also victorious in the opening round of their national championship with a 1-0 decision over the NAIT Ooks.

Martina Pettenon scored the only goal in the match that earned Douglas a spot in the Thursday’s semi-finals. She was also named the Royals’ player of the match.
