The Coquitlam Metro-Ford Edge managed to hang on to first place in the under-16 minor soccer standings after two tough games on the weekend.
On Saturday the Coquitlam club took on the second-place West Coast Impact, crawling back from a 1-0 deficit to hold the league rivals to a 2-2 tie.
The Impact jumped out to an early lead in the first half but the Edge were able to keep up the pressure and eventually evened the score with a a goal from Cassie Weimer.
West Coast re-took the lead off a corner kick header, but the Edge was again able to capitalize on a passing play started by Brittney Pastulovic. She was able to get the ball to Liz Stewart who found an open Lauren Best who buried the ball in the back of the net.
With Saturday's tie, the Edge needed a win against the West Vancouver Avalanche on Sunday to maintain first in the league.
Coquitlam's Caitlyn Ledger and Justyna Pomalecki staked the Edge a 2-0 lead in the first half before central defender Annelise Denny added another insurance marker in the second.
Great goal keeping by Angela Webster kept the West Van club off the scoreboard and Coquitlam was able to walk away with a 3-0 win.
TNT EXPLODES
The Coquitlam Metro-Ford TNT under-14 girls soccer gold club earned a split in its weekend games.
On Friday, the club defeated the Langley FC Piranhas 2-1 with goals coming off the foot of Cristina Danielli in the second half.
The club had a harder time on offence on Sunday when they lost 1-0 to the Ladner Pumas.
FIELD HOCKEY
Sydney Veljacic scored a hat trick as the Gleneagle Talons defeated the Heritage Woods Kodiaks in senior girls field hockey last week.
The Talons' Morgan Anson added an insurance marker to help her team defeat the Port Moody club 4-2. Both teams are preparing for the AAA tournament next month at Coquitlam Town Centre' Park's Mobilio, Cunnings and Fridge fields between Nov. 14 and Nov. 16.
The AAA tourney will not be the only field hockey event taking place in Coquitlam next month.
On Nov. 4, the field hockey community will gather at Cunnings Field for a match between the Tri-City Eagles Field Hockey Club's senior women's team against a squad made up of local high school all-stars. All of the participants will be raising funds for the BC Cancer Foundation, pursuing their goal of collecting $3,500.
The event was inspired by the Canadian Women's National Field Hockey Team's Came for the Cure in 2009, where more than $30,000 was raised. The fourth annual event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. at Cunnings Field at Town Centre Park.
