Port Coquitlam’s Danita Stroup racked up two assists as Team Canada caputred the world title in a tightly played 9-8 victory over Team U.S.A at the 2015 under-19 international championship in Edinburgh, Scotland, this week.
The club braved a downpour of rain, putting up the first goal of the match off the stick of Holly Lloyd, who connected with Selena Lasota to make it 1-0.
But the opponents bounced back with three unanswered goals before Canada’s co-captain Lydia Sutton stopped the barrage with a marker for the red and white to put the U.S. up by one.
Lasota and Lloyd managed to re-take the lead and pot the next three goals, but every time Canada took the lead, the U.S. had an answer.
However, when the game was tied 6-6, Stroup managed to find Lloyd with a no-look behind the back pass, connecting for the seventh goal of the game.
Once Canada regained the lead at 7-6 they would not relinquish it.
Sutton would go on to score her second of the game, followed by Lasota’s third of the game which would become the eventual game winner.
Team Canada had never reached the finals until this year. The U.S. has taken the championship banner for the last four seasons.
Stroup was one of three players from B.C. to make Team Canada and she will now turn her attention to her NCAA career, which will begin this fall with Long Island University.
