The Gleneagle Talons head into a new season with one of the top-ranked AAAA boys basketball teams in the province.
The Talons used overtime to get past Pitt Meadows 72-64 last Tuesday and followed that up with a 115-58 thumping of Byrne Creek on Wednesday.
"Our team has gotten off to a good start but we have a lot more to work on as we progress throughout our season," said Talons coach Tony Scott."We are in a very competitive conference and the Fraser Valley is a very difficult region to qualify from."
Gleneagle will put their No. 4 ranking to the test when they head to Walnut Grove this week for a tournament hosted by the No. 2-ranked Gators. The Talon's only loss in the exhibition season so far came at the hands of Walnut Grove 69-56.
The Terry Fox Ravens hold down the No. 9 spot in the AAAA rankings.
The Ravens held off Mennonite Educational Institute 78-58 Friday.
"It was a close game for the first half and then our guys played well in the third quarter and pulled away," said Ravens coach Steve Hanson.
Terry Fox hammered Lord Tweedsmuir 101-49 last Monday before falling to the top-ranked W.J. Mouat Hawks 86-72 Wednesday in Abbotsford.
"We were up seven at half and were actually up 15 halfway through the third quarter and then they went to a zone and our offence kind of struggled," said Hanson. "They finished out the quarter on a 24-6 run. Fourth quarter was pretty close but we just couldn't recover."
The Pinetree Timberwolves stopped Queen Elizabeth 53-45 in the finals of the Ed Terris Memorial Tournament in South Delta on the weekend. Arian Vafadar led Pinetree with 13 points and was named a tournament all-star. John Kim was tournament MVP. Ray Low's 17 points helped the Wolves get past Okanagan Mission 60-57. Pinetree opened the tournament with a 56-49 win over Earl Marriott, led by Shiv Parekh with 10 points.
The Centennial Centaurs picked up a pair of wins at a tournament in North Delta on the weekend. Centennial stopped Princess Margaret 60-46 and pounded South Delta 72-29. The Centaurs opened the tournament with a 60-47 loss to Queen Elizabeth.
Tyler Ashbury had 13 points against South Delta while Karn Johal put up 12 on Queen Elizabeth. Admir Hajdarevic scored 26 against Princess Margaret and was later named a tournament all-star.
"It was nice to see the boys bounce back and get a couple of wins," said Centaurs coach Alan Kaselj. "We're starting to learn that this game is all about runs and our players are starting to take the initiative to create some key runs in games."
At the Telus Classic Tournament, Port Moody knocked off New Westminster 66-62 but was shaded by Kitsilano 79-75.
The Heritage Woods Kodiaks held off Kitsilano 109-89 Monday night. The Kodiaks downed Delview 108-48 at their Kodiak Klassic tournament on the weekend.
