The Tri-City Eagles edged a group of high school all-stars 1-0 in field hockey action earlier this month but the biggest goal took place off the pitch.
The fifth annual Tri-Cities Field Hockey Game for the Cure at Cunnings Field in Coquitlam raised almost $3,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation.
Port Moody Grade 12 student Samantha McIlwrick organized the event for a third straight year, following in the footsteps of her sister Nicola who organized the inaugural event in 2009.
"The Game for the Cure [in the] Tri-Citieshas become a great grassroots community event for us," said McIlwrick. "The high school all-star players really look forward to competing in this game and working together to give back to our game and community."
She said the players and their parents have a lot of fun at the game but raising money for such an important cause is what really makes it so worthwhile.
"Cancer has touched so many Canadians that finding thecure would be so amazing," said McIlwrick. "We really appreciate the opportunity to help support the BC Cancer Foundation and the great research work that they do."
Spectators were able to get into the action as well, with halftime featuring a pink ball toss for a chance to win prizes including field hockey memorabilia.
Port Moody is currently in front in the contest among local high schools to be the top fundraiser, with the final cut off for donations set for Dec. 15. Online donations can be made at http://donate.bccancerfoundation.com/fieldhockey.
