The Canadian women's soccer squad advanced Friday to the semifinals at the London 2012 Olympics, and Coquitlam's Brittany Timko made her Games' debut late in the contest to help secure its spot in the final four.

The midfielder Timko, 26, came off the bench in the 88th minute to provide fresh legs and fend off host Great Britain, with Canada prevailing 2-0 via a solid, all-around performance at Coventry Stadium.

First-half goals by Jonelle Filigno (12th minute) and Christine Sinclair (26th) boosted Canada to the win and a date with the top-seeded U.S. on Sunday.

It was a completely different start for Canada from its previous outing, when the team fell behind 2-0 after just 16 minutes of play and had to scramble back for a 2-2 tie Tuesday versus Sweden.
