The 2014 class of top-echelon athletes and sport builders will be inducted into the Coquitlam Hall (and Wall) Of Fame in a special ceremony Thursday night.
CSHOF vice-president Les Wingrove said this year's Wall of Fame group covers the gamut of sports, from the ice to the pitch, and the golf course to the ski slopes.
Topping the list are two teams that dominated their sport in 2013: the Coquitlam Curling Club junior boys team and the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club's under-18 boys Sparta team.
Team Habkirk - comprised of Kyle Habkirk, Nicholas Umbach, Ryan Harbrink and Kento Sato and coached by Debbie Carroll - took home provincial titles in both the juvenile and high school circuits. They also earned bronze as an underage team competing at the B.C. junior championships.
Meanwhile the Sparta, led by coach Les Krivak, stormed through the provincial soccer championships to collect the Canadian under-18 title.
Among the individual honours for 2014 include Kyle Jones (soccer), Tamara O'Brien (gymnastics), Adrian Lee (table tennis), Chanell Botsis (track and field), Paul Clerc (soccer), Soobin Kim (golf), Kiera Leung (freestyle skiing), Debbie Carroll (curling coach) and Les Krivak (soccer coach).
These athletes will be honoured at a gala event taking place at the Coquitlam Sport and Leisure Complex on June 19 at 7 p.m., along with this year's Hall of Fame inductees Bill Bradley (lacrosse), Pat Philley (soccer), Gale Sayers (basketball) Brian Lewis (builder, field hockey) and Bill Mitchell (builder, wrestling).
Tickets for the event can be purchased at the door for $10, or online by emailing [email protected]. For more information on the Coquitlam Sports Hall of Fame, visit www.coquitlamshof.com.
