Tri-Cities seniors shine at Games

Tri-City athletes helped the Fraser Valley to the top of the podium at the B.C. Seniors Games last weekend in Kamloops. Fraser Valley led the medal haul with 168 gold, 139 silver and 97 bronze for a total of 404 medals.

For Coquitlam, Elaine Whidden won both the 200- and 400-metre sprints for women 55-59, while John Hylton-Foster won gold in tennis for men 70-74.

Urith Hayley took home seven silver medals on the track, placing second in the women 60-64 category in the 100 and 200 m, 80-m hurdles, weight throw, long jump, javelin and hammer throw.

Len Shannon took silver in the 25-m freestyle as well as the 25-m and 100-m backstroke for men 70-74.

Kelvin Cheng won silver in singles badminton for men 55-59, while Marie Baluk took silver in the women's singles 75-79. Ruby Ferguson won silver in novice hill climb for women 55-59 and took bronze for the time trial.

Robb Berezan claimed silver in the 100 m and 200 m for men 55-59. Len Lukey-Ott took home silver in singles table tennis for men over 80, while Garry Hornsberger won bronze in archery for men 60-64.

Aldert Dykstra of Port Coquitlam won three gold, two silver and a bronze in the pool for men 70-74. He finished first in the 800-m freestyle, 100-m individual medley and 100-m breaststroke, second in the 100-m backstroke, and third in both the 200-m and 400-m freestyle.

Mary Dyk took gold in the women 55-59 800-m freestyle, landing silver in the 50-m, 100-m and 400-m freestyle.

Renee Kinnear won a silver in the 50-m butterfly and 100-m breaststroke and bronze in the 50-m breaststroke and 100-m IM for women 55-59. Pauline Ng won bronze in singles table tennis for women 60-64.

For Port Moody, Sylvia Byers was triple-golden in the women's 55-59 pentathlon, javelin and hammer throw, while claiming silver in the shot put and weight throw and bronze in the discus.

Allen Percival won gold in both the 100-m and 200-m sprints for men 60-64.

Lori Graham took gold in the 10-kilometre road walk for women 55-59, winning silver in the hammer throw, 5,000-m power walk and 100-m sprint and bronze in both the 200- and 400-m.
