Tri-City basketball teams prep for B.C. finals

The Riverside Rapids and the Charles Best Blue Devils are gearing up for the opening bouts of the AAA girls B.C. High School Basketball Provincial Championships, which kicks off Wednesday.

The two teams are the only Tri-City clubs to qualify for the tournament, which kicks off at the Langley Events Centre and will run until the weekend.

The Rapids, ranked third in the province, will open the tournament against Burnaby Mountain secondary at 3:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the 11th ranked Blue Devils will face Handsworth secondary in the opening round.

Last week, Riverside finished the Fraser Valley Championships in third place, defeating MEI secondary 71-55 in the bronze medal match.

The team went 3-1 during the play downs, only falling to W.J. Mouat in the semifinal, which the Abbotsford high school won 61-39.

Meanwhile, the Blue Devils also had a strong showing at the tournament, finishing in seventh place.
