The Fraser Valley Phantoms earned berth in the Hockey Canada Esso Cup National tournament after defeating the Kelowna Rockets earlier last week.
The AAA Major Midget Female Hockey League squad, which features a number of Tri-City players, swept the best-of-three series, shutting out the interior opponents in both games.
Chelsea Wilson opened the scoring in Game 1, before Port Coquitlam's Kaely McMurty scored the second of the game in the 2-0 victory. Delaney Duchek, Jodi Gentile and PoCo player Shannon Morris-Read all scored assists, while goaltender Valencia Yordanov, also from Port Coquitlam, stopped all 16 shots she faced.
The next day, the team again jumped out to an early lead, this time with a goal from Kirsten Martin assisted by Morris-Read and McMurty. Yordanov was again solid in net, with a 19-save performance.
Madeleine Ericsson, another Tri-City athlete, is also on the team that will be heading to the national tournament later this month. The Esso Cup tournament gets underway this week in Stoney Creek, Ont.
