Another top Canadian Olympian has committed to competing at the Harry Jerome International Track Classic, to be held at Percy Perry Stadium June 28.
Decathlete Damian Warner, who won a bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, will compete in the 110m hurdles at the event, and possibly the long jump as well.
Warner used top placings in the 100 metres and 110 m hurdles, and a third in the 400 metres to finish third in the 10-discipline decathlon in Rio, behind gold medalist Ashton Eaton of the United States and Kevin Mayer of France. But with Eaton now retired, the race to be crowned the unofficial “world’s greatest athlete” is wide open.
Warner could stake his claim at the upcoming 2017 IAAF World Championship to be held in London, Aug. 4-13. Many of the athletes appearing at the Jerome are using the meet as a warm-up to the summer’s main track and field event. Warner won a bronze medal at the 2013 world’s in Moscow and improved to silver in Beijing in 2015, where he set his personal best with 8,695 points.
Warner is joining sprinter Andre De Grasse, who won a silver medal in Rio and a bronze in both the 100 and 400-metre relays, as well as middle distance runner Melissa Bishop, who will defend her title in the 800m.
