DUNEDIN, Fla. — Newcomer Steven Matz pitched three scoreless innings as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 in pre-season action on Tuesday.

The left-hander, acquired from the New York Mets in the off-season, allowed just one hit in the start. Matz hasn't given up a run in five innings this spring.

The Blue Jays (5-3-1) scored a pair of runs in the second and two more in the sixth.

Despite recording just one extra-base hit as part of a seven-hit attack, the Blue Jays had more than enough offence on a day their pitchers gave up only four hits.

Jordan Romano of Markham, Ont., picked up the save, striking out three in the ninth.

The Blue Jays face the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.
