Coquitlam RCMP blocked traffic at the scene of the accident at Nelson Street and Ridgeway Avenue Tuesday afternoon. By the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 19, it had re-opened.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story noted the woman was 72-years-old. Police now say she is 71.

A 71-year-old woman was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of Nelson Street and Ridgeway Avenue Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 18, sending her to hospital in serious condition and closing the area to traffic.

In a press release, Coquitlam RCMP said the woman's medical status is unknown, that the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with police and that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

One staff member at a nearby restaurant said he stepped outside to see what was happening shortly after the accident at around 3:45 p.m. The man, who did not want his name published, said the woman was taken away on a stretcher.

By 9 p.m. Tuesday evening, police vehicles and the pickup truck could still be seen at the intersection of Ridgeway and Nelson Street.

As a result of the collision, police closed the intersection. By Wednesday morning, Feb. 19, police said they had once again opened the intersection to traffic.

Further details were not immediately available, according to the press release, as the investigation is in its early stages.
